Chinese Ink and Colour on Rice Paper

This expressive painting by Lim Tze Peng vividly portrays the bustling charm of old Singapore’s Chinatown street life. Executed with his characteristic bold brushwork and radiant colors, the scene captures a neighborhood corner where everyday activities unfold with warmth and vitality.

On the left, patrons gather at a rustic kopi stall shaded by a patched zinc roof, their conversations animated, while others linger nearby. A trishaw waits at the center of the scene, emblematic of Singapore’s bygone modes of transport, while hawkers at makeshift roadside stalls ply their trade. In the foreground, villagers attend to daily chores, their presence adding rhythm and humanity to the urban fabric. The shophouses in the background, rendered in earthy ochres and reds, glow under a dramatic sky infused with orange, yellow, and green hues—colors that evoke both nostalgia and the unrelenting pulse of life.

This painting epitomizes Lim’s ability to transform fleeting urban memories into timeless cultural records. Collectors will recognize in this work not only the artistry of Singapore’s most celebrated living painter but also a rare and emotive document of a vanishing world, where community and livelihood intertwined under the open skies of a rapidly changing nation.
