三春晖
Calligraphy V

2000s

In Calligraphy V – San Chun Hui (Three Spring Radiance), Lim Tze Peng reinterprets a classical Chinese idiom with the vigor and emotional depth that define his mature calligraphic style. The phrase “三春晖” originates from the Tang poem You Zi Yin (《游子吟》) by Meng Jiao, symbolizing a mother’s boundless love that rivals the warmth of the spring sun.

Rendered in sweeping, forceful strokes, Lim’s calligraphy transcends linguistic meaning to become pure expression — rhythm, movement, and vitality captured in ink. Each character embodies both tension and grace: the bold verticals surge upward with life, while the sweeping curves dissolve into lyrical abstraction.

Created during the artist’s later years, this work exemplifies Lim’s “writing-painting” synthesis — a unique aesthetic where calligraphy becomes painting and emotion becomes form. It stands as a testament to his enduring spirit and the poetic resonance of human affection, timelessly illuminated like the warmth of spring.
