Chung Cheng Legacy

Lim Tze Peng’s formative years at Chung Cheng High School laid the foundation for a life defined by discipline, culture, and artistic pursuit.

He entered the school at Secondary Two, though his studies were disrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. Despite this interruption, he returned to complete his education and graduated in 1948.

Within the school’s rigorous academic environment and strong cultural ethos, Lim developed not only technical skills, but also a deep respect for tradition — a quality that would remain central to his artistic identity.

Teachers & Influences

Lim’s artistic awakening was shaped by a remarkable group of educators who guided and inspired him during his early years.

He studied under influential teachers trained in Chinese art traditions, including Wong Jai Ling, Liu Kang, and Yeh Chi Wei. Each played a distinct role in shaping his artistic language — from calligraphic discipline and ink techniques to oil painting and outdoor observation.

Beyond formal instruction, Lim was deeply influenced by classical Chinese aesthetics, particularly the writings of Kang Youwei and the ink traditions of Huang Binhong. These influences formed the intellectual and artistic framework that guided his lifelong practice.

Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery

The Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery at Chung Cheng High School stands as a living testament to his enduring legacy.

Opened in 2014, the gallery was made possible through Lim’s generous donation of his works, with the intention of inspiring future generations.

The collection spans decades of artistic development, including ink paintings, oil works, and calligraphy — offering students and visitors a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of his artistic journey within an educational setting.

Educational Programmes

Educational initiatives centred around Lim Tze Peng’s legacy continue to nurture young artists and deepen cultural appreciation.

Programmes such as the Lim Tze Peng Art Prize encourage students and alumni to observe, interpret, and document Singapore’s evolving landscape through art.

These initiatives reflect Lim’s belief that art must engage with the real world — encouraging young artists to step beyond the classroom and find inspiration in their surroundings.

Alumni & Community

Lim Tze Peng’s legacy extends beyond the school into a wider community of alumni, educators, cultural practitioners, and collectors.

Through exhibitions, shared spaces, and continued engagement, his works foster a sense of collective memory and identity. They serve not only as artistic achievements, but as cultural touchstones that connect generations.

Beyond institutional spaces, visitors and collectors may also encounter and acquire selected works at The Art Abode, where his art continues to be presented within a more intimate and contemplative setting — bridging heritage appreciation with private collecting.
